Why Red Peppers Are Good For You

why red peppers are good for you

If you’re still not convinced that spicy foods have health benefits aside from satisfying your palate, then you should know that eating red peppers are very beneficial. For one, red pepper helps burn calories. Physiology & Behavior journal once published a study that said red peppers enhance the body’s heat simply by burning additional calories. Researchers from Purdue University suggested that capsaicin, an active compound found in red peppers, may cause more calories to be burned especially after a meal. The researchers concluded that foods with red pepper may aid weight loss and maximize the effect of burning calories.

The research studied 25 adult men and women. The participants were categorized into two: those who did not use spices regularly and those who were hot spice users. It was found out that those who ate about 1 gram of red pepper increased their ‘postprandial energy expenditure’ and body temperature.

These changes could mean they have higher chances in weight loss as suggested by the study. Capsaicin, an active ingrediant found in chile peppers are believed to help in weight loss management. There are no scientific evidence yet but every time a test on weight loss and ingesting capsaicin is conducted, there’s always a positive correlation between the two. More capsaicin ingested usually means a decrease in weight. Of course, there may be other factors that can cause weight loss but a lot of people are saying eating spicy foods have greatly helped in achieving their fitness goals.

Red peppers are also a great source of lycopene, known to lower the risk of cancers like cervical, pancreatic, and prostate. Some studies also suggest that foods rich in lycopene and other pigments (zeaxanthin and lutein) can help prevent vision impairment.

Red peppers are also known to have high levels of antioxidant vitamins A, B6 (pyridoxine), C, and magnesium. So every time you see red peppers on the buffet table, don’t think twice on eating them, as they are really good for you health.
